April's Leadership Development Topic
The Leadership Passage Every Great Leader Needs to Know
Leadership is rarely a straight line. It’s a passage shaped by the stories we carry, the communities we belong to, and the experiences that form how we see the world. At the April Women’s Economic Development Council Leadership Development Meeting, members and guests will hear from a trailblazing leader whose own journey reflects the power of perspective in leadership.
Join WEDC as we welcome Dr. Gina Spivey-Brown, Ph.D., RN, MSA, FAAN, FNAP, FADLN, the 12th president of Oakwood University. Dr. Spivey-Brown officially assumed leadership of the historic institution on July 1, 2025, becoming the first female president in the university’s 129-year history. She brings with her a distinguished career spanning higher education, administration, ministry, and academic leadership.
Rooted in Oakwood’s mission of preparing students for lives of service through faith, scholarship, and leadership, Dr. Spivey-Brown is guiding the university into a new era of growth and innovation while honoring the institution’s legacy of excellence.
During this month’s meeting, Dr. Spivey-Brown will present “The Leadership Passage Every Great Leader Needs to Know." Her talk explores how race, gender, generational identity, family roles, and personal lived experiences shape the way each of us leads. Rather than viewing leadership through a single lens, she invites leaders to understand the unique pathways that influence decision-making, communication, and impact.
Key Takeaways:
- Attendees will gain insight into how identity and experience influence leadership style
- Why inclusive leadership perspectives strengthen organizations
- How to recognize and leverage the diverse experiences within a team.
- Practical reflections on navigating leadership transitions, building influence across differences, and cultivating a leadership approach that is both authentic and effective
This conversation promises to be both thought-provoking and energizing for leaders at every stage of their journey. Join us for a powerful discussion on the many pathways to leadership and the insight that comes from embracing the experiences that shape who we are as leaders.
