Brenda L S Matthews
Ms. Matthews is a business owner primarily focused on real estate. As the co-owner of Bellehouse Event Venue, her vision is to champion entrepreneurship and community development while promoting the growth of generational wealth.
Ms. Matthews earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Jackson State University and a Master of Science in Management Information Systems from Florida Institute of Technology.
In addition to her academic degrees, she holds a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and a Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification. Her professional designations and certificates also include the Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor (CRPC) designation, as well as certifications in Financial Planning and Executive Leadership Coaching.
Ms. Matthews’ public service career spanned over 20 years as a Systems Engineer for the Department of the Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation & Missile Center (DEVCOM AvMC) at Redstone Arsenal, AL. While at DEVCOM AvMC, she was a member of the Army Acquisition Corps and earned Level III certifications in both Systems Engineering and Program Management. Prior to her time at DEVCOM AvMC, Ms. Matthews worked in the private sector for Eveready Battery Company, Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), Oracle, and International Business Machines (IBM). Her private sector experience includes roles as a Software Developer, Programmer Analyst, Software Engineer, Test Manager, and Project Manager.
Ms. Matthews serves as the Vice-Chair of Main Street Madison and is a Charter member of both the Mayor’s Small Business Council and the Rotary Club of MadCity. She is the Director of The Matthews Mission Fund and a member of the Women's Economic Development Council (WEDC). In addition to her current service on the Madison Station Historic Preservation Commission, she is the past Board Chair for Madison Visionary Partners (MVP). She is also an active member of Progressive Union MB Church, where she serves in the New Member, Greeter and Security ministries.
As a graduate of Leadership Greater Huntsville (FOCUS 25 and FLAGSHIP 27) and the Civic Awareness Academy (CAA-3), Ms. Matthews is dedicated to community improvement. She is an active life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., where she previously served on the executive board, and has volunteered her time with the AUM Foundation, Village of Promise, and Manna House.
In support of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) initiatives, Ms. Matthews volunteered with the original AMRDEC team for the annual Girls’ Science and Engineering Day at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), which aims to sustain interest in STEM among girls in grades 3 through 5. Additionally, she has served as a judge for eCYBERMISSION, evaluating online STEM projects for students in grades 6 through 9.
Originally from Crawford, Mississippi, Ms. Matthews has been a resident of Madison, Alabama, for over 25 years. She and her husband, Roderick (Rod), have two sons, Justin R. and Jordan A., and two daughters-in-law, Dorothy and Cheyna. They are also the proud grandparents of Josiah, Lionel, Cairo, and Juniper.
Ms. Matthews hobbies and special interests include volunteering, traveling, and spending time with family. She also enjoys listening to music, exercising, gardening, reading, and focusing on legacy-building.
